Pride and Less Prejudice (PLP) is hosting our third annual Banned Together Auction, in conjunction with Banned Books Week, and we’d love to have you participate. From October 5 at 10AM ET until October 8 at 10PM ET, you can bid on items, buy items, make a donation, and learn more about our mission. You are only allowed to participate if you live in the US.

We all know how much our world needs to change in its understanding and support of LGBTQ+ communities. One area that needs to change is culture, which is the central aim of PLP. We are a nonprofit working to create societal change through representation: starting at the earliest (and most vulnerable) of ages.

In a nutshell, we send LGBTQ+ inclusive literature to pre-k through third grade teachers FOR FREE. Knowing that identity is intersectional and multifaceted, we feature books that center LGBTQ+ characters from racially, linguistically, and ethnically diverse backgrounds. These books spark observations and conversations among children in - and even beyond - their classrooms. We also provide guides, resources, and conversation-starters for teachers. 

PLP fights anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, culture, and legislation with representation in the form of children's literature. All children deserve to see themselves and be seen by others. All children deserve to see their lives, identities, and families reflected in and normalized by high quality representation. All children deserve to see the world of possibilities - and not the limits - of their identity. The earlier children are exposed to identities other than their own, the easier it is for them to navigate the messages they receive from the heteronormative, patriarchal society in which they live. The more exposure children have to the intricate, unique, and beautiful forms that identity takes, the more comfortable they will be in accepting themselves and celebrating peers. 

Changing culture is no easy task, but with high quality, intersectional representation, and with as wide a reach as possible, PLP is committed to fighting the fight.
